Unique Identification with Multiple Quartos

Hello!

I have three quartos connected to the same computer via usb and need some way to uniquely identify each. If I am to run lsusb -v or udevadm info --name=/dev/ttyACM_ I cannot find any unique property of the quartos. Two quartos return the same serial number, while one has a different serial number. Is there any way, from the computer, to tell these devices apart?

Thanks for bring this to my attention. It looks like there's a bug in reporting the serial number of the device over USB. I'll post an update here when I know more.

Ok, I think we have a fix. Unfortunately, it requires an update to the bootloader. Please use the latest beta release, 1.10.1+beta1, for the qNimble boards. If you aren't using the beta channel, you'll need to change your Additional boards manager url to https://qnimble.com/package_qnimble_beta_index.json (more details at the Quick Start Guide to see this release. Once you have that beta url configured, you should be prompted to update the qNimble boards package 1.10.1+beta1 release.

Once that's updated, under File, Examples, you should see a QuartoUpdater listed undo Misc:

Flash that to your board and connect to it with a serial terminal program (putty, teraterm, etc) and it should show you what version of the bootloader and firmware you have let you update the bootloader to 0.6.0 by typing 'newbootloader'. That will put the new bootloader on and now your Quarto should report a longer and now unique serial number.

Hi Ben,

Having some trouble with this. I followed your instructions and connected to the Quartos using putty. I saw the message to update the bootloader and typed newbootloader. The serial numbers were the same as before. I then unplugged and re-plugged the Quartos, but the serial numbers are again the same.

Any advice? Is there any way to verify that the bootloader was updated correctly?

The quickest option is to run the upgrader again and type 'Info' that should display your Quarto serial number (this is not the USB serial number) and firmware and bootloader version. If the bootloader upgrade worked, you should have 0.6.0.

Also, you can run the Misc / DeviceInfo program from the ArduinoIDE to get the same information.

If you have 0.5.X, please try upgrading the bootloader and again and if that doesn't work, let me know and if you get any error messages, etc.

If you do have 0.6.0 bootloader, then you should have the new unique USB serial number. What serial number are you seeing and how are you measuring it? The old serial number was a number and the new one should be in hexadecimal.

Looks like I wasn't upgrading the bootloader properly. Connecting to the device and typing newbootloader in the Arduinno IDE worked, rather than using Putty. The serial numbers are unique now, thanks!
